» Clouds Make Sounds

Folk/Indie/Rock

Five Dollar Cover

10 PM - 1 AM

Clouds Make Sounds was born of sincere friendships, youthful musings, and genuine talent. The four original members began writing and working in January of 2010. The music that they create, quite simply, turns heads. It demands complete attention, alternately serene and bombastic, passionate and playful, it is something to completely lose yourself in. And that is exactly what those who have seen Clouds in their hometown and along the east coast will tell you.

Clouds entered the studio in July 2010 and after a month of 8-12 hour days finished recording their first full length album. In the process Clouds enlisted the help of Shannon Cantor, who they added as a part-time member in August 2010. Part time so that she can fulfill her other obligations, mainly high school. After a few near-dormant fall months and their very first tour in the Winter of 2010-2011, they finished mixing and mastering the album and are releasing it on March 25th, 2011, a year after their very first show.

With members ranging from 16 to 21 years of age (Vocalists Shannon Cantor, is still in high school), Clouds Make Sounds is definitely a young band. So it is all the more impressive that the level of musicianship is exceptional, that the song structures are this complex, and that there is so much room to grow within the constructs of the band’s sound.

Their album exhibits the broad range of their musical influence and prowess. Jeff Buckley meets Fiona Apple in a forest of driving poly-rhythms, folk sensibilities, dense harmonies, and an ever-present all-encompassing atmosphere. Their music is heard with the ears, but felt in the chest.

on “Chasing Joy,” complex polyrhythms and lilting melodies support each other, reaching a level of rhythmic proficiency one usually only finds in metal. Josh Hines’ crystal tenor is a highlight, underlining the melodic strengths of the songs.

Clouds Make Sounds are: Josh Hines, Deron Johnson, Joe Marchese, Jeff Mach, and Shannon Cantor

Influences: Jeff Buckley, Grizzly Bear, Sigur Ros, Anathallo, Circa Survive, Fleet Foxes, Akron/Family, Minus The Bear, Radiohead, Incubus

The five members are all highly trained students of the Uptown Music Collective in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

» Psychedelphia

Experimental/Jazz/Psychedelic/Jam

Five Dollar Cover

10 PM - 1 AM

Psychedelphia might be called a progressive jam-rock-fusion band. They might be called a psychedelic funk band. But the truth is that Psychedelphia just plays the music that they need to play without regard for the imaginary boundaries known as style. The sounds that Psychedelphia creates in a show are just as varied and numerous as the influences that have shaped their musical minds. It's this keen ability to "shape-shift and genre-morph" (Glide Magazine) that sets them apart from most acts and keeps fans returning to shows, always braced for a surprise.

While it is clear to these fans that Psychedelphia has great fun on stage, they work very hard off the stage to create and refine a musical language unlike any other group, dedicated to musical invention, skilled musicianship and pushing past any boundary they come across. Psychedelphia?s original music covers vast territory, from spacey psychedelic to blues, avant-garde rock to country bluegrass, electronic grooves at break-neck speeds to slow, simple, nasty funk. In all of this, they maintain a truly recognizable voice- tying all their sounds together with emotion, groove, and a good sense of humor.

Since their initial assembly in late 2008, Psychedelphia has taken an explosive launch onto the live music scene. In less than two years they have played countless shows, played prominent roles in multiple festivals throughout the Northeast, and embarked on several tours in support of their debut album, "Paradigm" (2010). Their dedication and musical prowess has been recognized by a rapidly growing fanbase, and major media outlets such as Relix, High Times, Glide and Music Connection Magazines.

In their travels, Psychedelphia has shared the stage with many known acts, some being close friends. Among these are Keller Williams, DJ Logic, Ozomatli, The Breakfast, The Mantras, Papadosio, Steve Molitz (Particle), Mike Rempel (Lotus), Mike Stern, Rodney Holmes, Marco Benevento, Willie Waldman, Juggling Suns, Brothers Past, and Elliot Levin.

» Sour Soul from Mexico City!

Indie/Psychedelic/Soul

Free Show!

7 PM - 10 PM

Sour Soul is a four piece indie/psych rock act, formed in Mexico City in 2007. They quickly built a loyal following by delivering high energy performances that captured the best elements from the many styles that have influenced each member of the group. In 2009, the band released it's debut album entitled Liquid Sky Divers, which was co-produced by music legend Stephen Stuart Short. Sour Soul re-released the album in 2010 with several new tracks produced by themselves. The additional songs enjoyed a warm reception from fans who recognized the maturity of the band's sound.

In 2011, Sour Soul released it's highly anticipated encore album; L'appel du Vide. Grammy award winner, Justin Leeah (Sparta, At the Drive In, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), engineered this experimental concept album that took the group's sound in directions that they had never gone before. Their artistic bravery was not overlooked. On March 8-14, 2011, Sour Soul's single - "Fum Fum Fum" from L'appel du Vide was chosen by Starbucks (Mexico) as their "Music Pick of The Week."

As seriously as Sour Soul takes their studio productions, it's truly their relentless touring schedule that has created an international demand for their performances. In addition to the many cities and festivals in Mexico that the group has played, Sour Soul has toured the U.S five times. The band has performed in most of the major music markets in the US including Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Brooklyn, Austin, Las Vegas, Denver and New Orleans. Earlier this year, the band played 65 shows to diverse crowds across the US on their "Laughs & Silly Dancing" tour; making a total of 187 shows performed in the US between 2009 and 2011.

"This quintessential indie band is a fine blend of class. The four multi-instrumentalists members master the alchemical art of transforming traditional sounds into new, mind blowing music. Their live show is a must see energy explosion." ~Relix magazine

Whether touring nationally or performing at their favorite local digs, this up-and-coming group of young musicians features a roundtable of powerful lead vocals and harmonies that dance with captivating violin lines and soar over stunning soundscapes, shaped by years of classical training infused with an irresistible love for musical roots and a fresh, ultramodern mentality.

» The Right Now (8-Piece Rockin' Soul) From Chicago!

Soul/Funk/Pop

Unbelievable Free Show!

7 PM - 10 PM

Home is the feeling that bubbles up irrepressibly inside of you when you arrive exactly where you belong. Coincidentally, the feeling that you get when you listen to The Right Now is awfully similar.

The Right Now plays soul music, and soul music is all about feeling; not style, not fashion, but emotion. The band's new album Carry Me Home, set to be released on March 3, 2010, lives within the four walls erected by the arresting lead vocalist Stefanie Berecz, the stellar songcraft of Brendan O'Connell, the spot-on horns and layers of back-up vocals, and a solid bedrock of rhythm.

Stefanie Berecz's voice is what takes the songs on Carry Me Home from infectious to revelatory. Nowhere is that more evident than on the album's title track. Begun in a hushed, delicate tone, Berecz weaves a tender lullaby, gradually building in intensity but never mindlessly belting. The band matches her every step of the way. The Right Now is tighter than tight, at times functioning almost as a single instrument rather than a collection of players; never overplaying, always exerting effortless control over its dynamics.

This telepathic connection is the kind of chemistry that can only come from relentless gigging. The Right Now continually tours the country, converting listeners to a brand of R&B that is simultaneously classic and contemporary.

Case in point: "Ain't Going Back." Beginning with a deeply funky dialogue between two guitars that could have been on an early Parliament record, Berecz comes in with a blue note that is pure Chaka Khan. The restraint of the first verse gradually opens up into what can only be described as an anthem, with Berecz firmly in charge, giving back her wedding ring. The ingredients are classic. The result? Nothing but contemporary.

The music on Carry Me Home exudes confidence. One listen makes it clear that The Right Now is a band that knows exactly where its home is: onstage. Home is a feeling. And The Right Now brings that feeling to every show, in every venue, in every town they play. If you're lucky, your town will be next.

Blind Boy Chocolate & the Milk Sheiks

Early-Jazz/Hokum/Ragtime/Pre-War-Blues

From Ashville, NC - Free Show!

11 PM - 12 AM

Blind Boy Chocolate & The Milk Sheiks started in the summer of 2009 as a three piece with Dwight Hawkins, Nicholas Marshall and Antone Costa primarily featuring the wood saw, mandolin and guitar respectively. After a half a year of heavy busking, the band gained momentum and began to play inside venues as well as on the sidewalk. Since then, the band has expanded to solidly include Alex Brady on the gut bucket and has had other members in and out of the band as time and circumstances permitted. The band performed at Merlefest in the Spring of 2011 and has taken its antics throughout the Southern states, up and down the East coast and even a bit out in the Western states, but has mainly made a name for itself in Western NC. The band's repertoire is drawn largely from a bank of early American music, consisting of both black and white string and jug band music and draws on the pre-war blues, ragtime, early jazz and songster traditions.

Crow Quill Night Owls

Early-Jazz/Blues/Alt-Folk/Ragtime

From Port Townsend, WA - Free Show!

10 PM - 11 PM

Kit "Stymee" Stovepipe and Windy City Alex met a few years back. They where both playing in bands, Kit in the Inkwell Rhythm Makers, and Alex in Below the Salt.

They both shared an interest in old music, silent films, drawing comix, staying up all night and each other. They began singing in the bath tub and hunting for old 78's and antique sewing machines together. Sooner than later, old tenor banjos started to appear, and thanks to a Mr. Lucas Hicks, one stayed.

The universe swirled around dangerously and feirce, like wine rushing through the esophagus of a serpent eating it's own tale, stacked on the backs of turtle shells.Feet slid on banana peels clear across the room. Wool clouds where violet, pink and crimson.... bobbing like carrots fastened with twine. The therory of reletivity broke down like an old engine on rusty tracks, and banged it's way through past the letter "Z", and started poking around. Right went left, horrizontal went sideways... night turned to day... and the two peered out at the dawning of this strange and familiar dream, with crooked teeth, and fingers stained in india ink. After that , they began playing music together pretty much all the time.

Not much time went by before the two of them started playing music with their buddies Shannon & Matt. then they met the Gallus Brothers and started playing music with them too. all of a sudden, wash Rag Joe from the Inkwell Rhythm Makers was back! and folks just kept commin'! Asher, Stale Bread Scottie, Hans, Fiddlin' Mike, Eerie Shiri, Shaney, Annie Ford, and many more! so altho there is no steady band, there is a rotating cast of musicians and friends we play and tour with. ... altho (ahem) a steady band would be helpful when it comes to booking tours guys(ahem)...

"Yodelin'" Brody Douglas Hunt

Raw Country/Minimalist/Side-Porch Blues

From Ashville, NC - Free Show!

9 PM - 10 PM

I don't remember the first time I met Brody Douglas Hunt. But say that name to any one in the country music entertainment industry, ...and they won't know what the fuck you're talking about either. Thats because Brody Douglas Hunt sings the songs of the street. the honky tonks, curbsides, basements, and dive bars of the forgotten and the tumble down. The real country music of America. Places where the tattered neon lights are battered in the steam of the deep fryer and the smell of stale rainier wafts from out the worn barroom carpets that squeak under creaky old leather boots that have seen more than many nights under the stars. Brody Douglas Hunt has lived it, he's been there....and you can hear it in his rip roarin' yodel that he aint' stopin', except for to maybe nail some blond pop star back stage at the C.M.A. Brody could tell you a thing or two about Emmett Miller, also about riding the rails, corndogs, and about mushrooms. In some provinces he's known as the Yodeling Mycologist. He's a man that can make a precision cut with a chainsaw, but also knows that salad, (as good as it is for you) is not gods master plan. I've seen him land a punch that sent a man sideways into the air. I've, seen him yodel his way into a girls heart/whatever and I've also seen him, head hung low standing in the rain with a broken guitar. Seen him high steppin' in those cowboy fringe pants he's got, laughin' and singin'. Seen him with his six gun, drunk, shootin' at tin cans on the side walk between the library dumpster and the "good news" Jesus store in Eugene Oregon under a full moon. He's a man with a few different faces and three names. He's been held up, held down, talked to, talked about, talked up,and down. Heart broken, robbed at gun point for crack money, loved, left, cheated, thrown in jail, and found a sort of a fat dog, that he still has, in the process. Brody has a voice like a corn dog deep fried in the roots of country music and cooled in a prairie breeze...and it's this kind of homespun ingenuity that has made Brody Douglas Hunt a success among his peers. The other day I was downtown puttin' my guitar back in my case after busking when I saw Brody walkin' up. Guitar slung over his shoulder, hair slicked back, skull and cross corndogs belt buckle holding up his black pants with the red fringe, western boots... matching shirt and a singing cowboy necktie round' his neck with a half smoked lucky strike in his mouth. "Man". he said. " I was down there playin' my git-ar' and yodelin' and....well....do you ever just feel like a fuckin' freak?!" "Is this really what I do, I mean, kids are cryin' and shit." What can you say? Brody Douglas hunt is a freak. one of the best out there. .....and not even I know just how weird he is. ~Kit "Stymee" Stovepipe

» Bushmaster featuring Gary Brown - Bullfrog Debut

Blues/Funk/Rock

Five Dollar Cover

10 PM - 1 AM

Bullfrog Debut!

Gary Brown, guitarist and leader of the American blues-rock band Bushmaster (together with Eric Gales, whose new CD I will discuss next week), is the man that can further carry the torch of Jimi Hendrix; for as I already said last week, the mailbox has become overflowing with young guitar gods who slake themselves to the source of Jimi and Stevie. However he is not just another clone. And of the slightest well known perhaps, for on the internet there is to be found extremely little of him, no real bio information on his own website, outside large quantities of live-action photographs! Furthermore what we found on MySpace: 35 years old, of colored origin, from Pennsylvania. That is about it, but is all that info really important? Where it goes is the music, and that pleases me well, modern bluesy guitar-rock with high Hendrix content, as I said already. Already from the first notes in the opening song, "Good Life," is the likeness noticeable, many fuzz, many wah-wah, and also the vocals have many resemblances. The title song "Drowning On Dry Land" has some aching of "Voodoo Child". "Hard Word " breathes in " Wind Cries Mary". But sometimes it goes very contemporary: "Cosmic Funk" is wholly funky, with quick fragments of city sounds, and naturally again that overpowering tearing guitar. The second funky groove is "Big Back Yard" it's voiced with scratching sounds, rap and a skipping funk beat, already and intonation of Gary here 100 per cent Hendrix. The large number live photographs, laudatory reactions on a forum and a number of films on "You Tube" and "My Space" do we suspect that Bushmaster worth the trouble as a live band. Convince Yourself!

» Turbine Bullfrog Debut!

Danceable/Groove-Pop/Psych-Rock/Prog

Free Show!

Area Debut from NYC!

10 PM - 1 AM

The overarching sonic identity of this New York City-based quartet was forged over the last five years, starting when it was a tenacious duo comprised of guitarist / singer and primary songwriter Jeremy Hilliard and harmonicist / rhythm guitarist / singer-songwriter Ryan Rightmire. As a duo, Turbine started to experiment in odd time signatures and unorthodox compositional structures as they crafted songs that were both accessible and upbeat, despite their remarkable complexity and musical sophistication. After a few years of this, they realized they needed a rhythm section, brought on bassist Justin Kimmel and drummer Octavio Salman, and debuted the new band on a national tour at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, 10,000 Lakes Festival, Wakarusa and Gathering Of The Vibes. They then returned to the northeast to resume the arduous process of building their regional fan base as a full band.

Turbine now stands poised to emerge as one of the most forward thinking, musically ambitious bands in their loosely defined scene. With the rhythm section, Rightmire was able to realize his futuristic vision for the harmonica, which he plays with a neck sling, all the while playing guitar and singing harmonies and leads. Effects and technology have transformed his instrument’s traditional role: the keyboards, turntablism, strings and other odd sounds that the compositions call for are delivered by this Hohner-endorsed pioneer of the harp’s future. It is common for people stumbling into a Turbine show to be amazed by the spectacle of Rightmire, but as they start to absorb what is going on around them, listeners begin to appreciate the passion and intelligence of Hilliard’s vocals and lyrics, then find themselves impressed with his intense, fiery guitar work. Underpinning all of  this, Kimmel's bass lines help define and punctuate the music, setting-up and pushing grooves forward, driving the bus from the low end in typical prog-rock fashion, while leaving enough room for the nuance of the song structures and the dynamics of Salman’s percussive backbeat to shine through.

» Exter Vs. Kimmock (XVK) Halloween Show - with opening act, Suicaudio!

Indie/Post-Rock/Alt-Folk/Roots

Spooky Free Show!

8 PM - 11 PM

Working with the shorthand monicker XvK, cellist Trevor Exter and percussionist John Kimock have a unique chemistry as musicians, wringing the depth of drums and cello. The music skirts the edges of indie rock, Americana, roots rock and improvisation that verges on jazziness. At once modern and tribal, melodic and in the groove, the rhythm section of the drums and bottom of the cello creates a foundation for Exter to weave melody and harmony-- created with an occasional loop-- from the high end of the cello and then solo with pizzicato and bowed solos. The surprising range of sounds created by these two artists fleshes out the lyrics and reassures the listener that this is a song based duo, not just another experimental combo exploring the depths of left field and spaciness. Thanks to Kimock's creative, artistic drumming, the songs take on a life of their own, propelling the artists and their audience into the next mood or texture of the piece and giving the listener the impression of a full band. The overall effect is somewhat reminiscent of Morphine or maybe The Black Keys, circa 2007, and it "...makes you feel like you found something you didnʼt even know you were missing." (BreakThruRadio.com)
